What is counseling?
Counseling provides an opportunity to understand and resolve the underlying issues that cause distress. It will allow you to discuss your problems with a non-judgmental, objective listener who can assist in viewing your struggles differently and developing creative solutions. Although a counselor will not be able to solve your problems, they will be there to help and guide you through the process. During the first couple of sessions, your therapist will obtain information about the various areas of your life in order to determine the best course of treatment. Your counselor will be knowledgeable about a wide variety of issues and able to provide services to meet your needs and assist with referrals if needed.
How do I know if counseling is for me?
You may wonder whether it would be appropriate to talk about your concerns with a counselor. Perhaps others who know you well have suggested therapy. Specific indicators that counseling services might be beneficial include:
You are ready to make a change, and will be an active participant in the work towards that change.
emotional difficulties such as sadness, anxiety, anger, etc.
a recent traumatic event or loss
concerns about substance use
difficulty functioning on a day-to-day basis
Are counseling sessions confidential?
Yes! Lille’s Love Counseling takes confidentiality very seriously, and no information will be exchanged with individuals or agencies outside of our sessions unless you provide us with explicit consent to do so. I recognize that a safe and confidential environment is crucial for you to feel comfortable sharing personal information.
In rare circumstances, the confidentiality policy requires unauthorized disclosure of information. Such circumstances would include when the therapist believes the client’s life is in immediate danger, when the safety of others is at risk, when there is suspicion of child or elder abuse, intellectual/physical persons, or when requested by subpoena or court order. If you have any questions or concerns about the confidentiality policy, please feel free to talk them over with your therapist.
Is Lille’s Love Counseling LGBTQ+ friendly?
Yes! All are welcome, honored and valued here. As a person who identifies in community, I am hecka affirming.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
What about medications?
During the first few sessions, we will discuss your medical history and if you are currently on medications. We will also discuss if a medication consult with a psychiatrist would be recommended. Medication can be very effective but it alone may or may not solve all issues. Research finds medication in conjunction with counseling provides best therapeutic outcomes. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals. At times, I may recommend that counseling goals include a medication consult prior to the work beginning.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person has different issues and goals for counseling, it will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
